3 Cone Soccer Touch Training
I designed this training after a recent game where it was apparent all of my players had a good soccer touch, but they wouldn’t always complete the passes to the players they were intended for. For example, we would intercept a throw-in, and have a beautiful touch, right to a player on the other team. Or, there would be a ball in the air, and we would collect it, but it would fall right to the other team. I started thinking about a 3 cone soccer touch training where players would have to redirect passes out of the air to different players to help them not only improve their first touch, but also their accuracy of those touches.

This is a very simple set-up. You will want to have 3 cones in a 5 yard triangle.
The exercise starts with a player serving it to a working player, that player then redirects the pass to the open player. Then it works back around. Keep going for 1 minute, then switch. Try to go as quick as you can, all players engaged and actively working, try not to have the ball hit the ground.
Key coaching points:
- Granny Toss the passes, underhand and soft so working player can easily achieve proficiency.
- Make sure the ankle is locked and touches are soft to open player. Quality passes will have no spin on them.
- Try not to let the ball drop and hit the ground.
- Train both feet.
- Make sure you are adjusting your body position to open up so you can play the next person in line.
Start with feet, then move to head. You can also do thigh and chest if you like, in this video, we only did feet and head.
I have another progression lined up for this 3 cone soccer touch training which will be available in the coming weeks, it's much faster paced and really challenges the players awareness in addition to touches. Start here with getting the technique right.
Get out there and train.
