This training is somewhat similar to 4 Soccer Dribbling Patterns to Improve Ball Control in that it is a 4 cones set-up with a center piece. However, instead of working in a square we are now working on our soccer dribbling in a diamond pattern. This allows for tighter turns and quicker changes of direction as you flow through the exercise.
The major focus of this training is to be able to carry the ball at game speed, change direction, change speed all while keeping the ball super glued to your foot….like it’s attached to a string. If you are really pushing it, you might find yourself slipping or falling over the ball on turns especially when training your weak foot. That’s ok, it’s far better to push yourself and have minor fails, than to coast and look cool only to be found out in the games.
What I love about this training is that you can do it by yourself in your backyard in a 10×10 area with 5 cones. You could use old shoes, a few water bottles, rolled up socks…whatever, get creative get gritty, don’t let not having big orange cones be an obstacle.
See the video and diagram below.
Soccer Dribbling Patterns Coaching Points
1. Use Right Foot Only Dribbling Through Cones
2. Use Left Foot Only Dribbling Through Cones
3. Use Inside only of both feet dribbling through the cones.
4. Use outside only of both feet dribbling through the cones.
Make sure to warm-up properly and train at game speed. This is a perfect follow-up training to 4 Soccer Dribbling Patterns, so if you get in the zone in your backyard and are looking to stack some workouts this two compliment each other very well.
Ok guys, get out there and train.
